Introduction The modern custom ocular prosthesis crafted by a skilled professional ocularist is a wonderful achievement. It allows the wearer to return to normal activities - their artificial eye being virtually undetectable. All who have
worn an artificial eye for some time will agree on the
importance of appearance, but the reality of wearing an
artificial eye day after day makes comfort the prime
consideration to most wearers. The statement
"the eye looks fine but it is not comfortable"
is heard very often by the ocularist. The most
common cause of this problem is inadequate lubrication on
the surface of the prosthesis resulting in irritation to
the eyelids as normal blinking occurs. The SLP,
Self-Lubricating Prosthesis was developed by Kevin V.
Kelley, a Board Certified Ocularist from Philadelphia,
PA, to solve this problem. |
